2764 Jacob Young Trio "Eventually"
Recorded May 2021, Klokkereint Studio, Gjøvik
On the fourth album as a leader for ECM, Young brings along longtime collaborator in Mats Eilertsen on bass and a newcomer to my ears, Audun Kleive, on drums. All the songs are written by Young and we get to hear them in this guitar trio format.
I really enjoyed his previous album, which was with the Marcin Wasilweski trio and Trygve Seim. And I’m happy to report that I also really enjoyed this one, too.
The tunes are all really good and they are sticking with me after a few listens. Eilertsen’s bass is prominent and Kleive really drives things forward. Take “Schönstedtstraße” for example, Kleive is really pushing it–because the composition calls for it, but also because it seems to me that he’s that kind of drummer. I also like “The Dog Ate My Homework” and not just because of the title.
Young is a bit of a chameleon, adapting to his own songs. At times he can sound like Scofield (in “I Told You In October”), and at others, a wee bit like Jakob Bro or Frisell. All of this, I fully support!
Let’s go Jacob! Keep it up.

Great call on Kleive's driving energy throughout. That chameleonic quality in Young's playing is facinating because it never feels forced, like he's letting each composition dictate the tone rather than imposing a signature sound. Back when I first got into ECM's guitar trios, that adaptability was what made certain albums stay in rotation longer than others.
